Theme 2015: “Micro – Macro Universe“
The theme for our 2015 international snow-art contest Kunstwege/Vias d’art Pontresina is an homage to the beauty of the tiny and the inconceivable huge matter of the universe. It’s an homage to the period of time of creation, transformation and transience as well. On the one hand the theme “Micro – Macro Universe“ consists of assembly (hierarchical/cooperative interaction) on the other hand of optical or imaginary scaling up and scaling down. The process of approaching and distancing should be a symbol for the real and imagined universe and should find its genuine equivalence in the unique material snow. Zoom in/out-operations are created by reciprocal exchange between “artist“, “perception“ and “medium“– however the „macro-artist“ remains the ART. Hyperscaling as a strategy used in contemporary media plays an important part in the creation and the perception of artistic output. The translation of the theme “Micro – Macro Universe“ represents certainly a challenge for the artists as well as for the jury, being a selection criterion. Our theme is thus chosen for artists to present their rather abstract or process-oriented creation. The sculpture to be created consists of elements which form a valid and esthetic “ensemble“, underlined by lighting effects and the accuracy of its realisation. The proposed projects are judged considering: The implementation of the theme, the grade of innovative contribution to the contemporary sculpture, artistic display and originality, lighting effects, the craftsmanship as well as the proportionality and harmony of the object.
Kunstwege / Vias d'art
Pontresina, a place in the Upper Engadine, renowned for both its natural beauty and its cultural achievements, launched an extraordinary platform for artists in 2005: Kunstwege/Vias d’art Pontresina. The winter-exhibition is an international snowART contest will have its fourth edition in 2015. Before that, Pontresina had in the nineties already been one of the sites of the International Snow Festival St. Moritz. A comparable event is a summer-exhibition which takes place in the village along Via Maistra This exhibition is outlined as a sculpture show, presented by Grisons’ artists and artists from a host canton. Both exhibitions are held as triennal. Snow - ice -light - air - wood - water - stone and rock ... the aim is to combine creativity with the materials and elements of our natural environment. Pontresina is the ideal place for the expression of those elements by artists. The winter-exhibition is presented on the banks of the river Flaz next to the cross-country ski course of the famous Engadine Ski Marathon. Along the cross-country course Tolais, the artists create a dream just using snow and light. The exhibits offers unexpected encounters and insights to the passer-by, not only during daytime, but in a particularly impressive way at night. Works of art of strong expression are created which, in spring, find their ways back into the natural cycle.
The last three editions of this event showed impressively that it is possible to create with snow as sole and unique material a qualified contribution to the contemporary sculpture art, transient in fact but showing an unique and profound expressiveness and beauty. Therefore the committee demands an artistically innovative approach by all participants of Kunstwege Pontresina. It’s a deliberate rejection of the effective but occasionally trivial snowsculpture events which are hold all over the world. The committee of “Kunstwege“, in cooperation with the Culture Commission of Pontresina and Pontresina Tourist Board, invites teams of snow- and light-artists to participate this year as well in the realisation of Kunstwege 2015. Starting mid December 2015 in arctic cold, skilled snowartists create delicate or massive sculptures out of a difficult and unpredictable material. The structure and the humidity of the snow, the location and the air temperature determine largely the tools used, the planning and the execution of the respective steps. More than 15 tons of snow will be moved, rebuilt, shaped and carved during 5 days. The material and the dimensions are not to be underestimated. They are a real challenge for all the artists for the the creation of their transitional beauties and all their work is carried out knowing that all these exhibits will sooner or later melt irretrievably - and will make blank space for new things.Until then the objects will be daily illuminated from 5 p.m. They will persuade the cross country skiers to take a break or invite the pedestrians for a winter walk.
